Dare to Be Different (1)

One of the lessons we must imbibe if we want to be victorious in life is that we are not standardised products. We are unique creatures. We are created to be unique and different from each other. When God created us, He created us with different personality, features, potentials, physical stature, etc.

Presently, the world’s population is over 7 billion, and out of this population, you can never find two persons that are exactly the same. Generic scientists have made us to understand that if you had 300 billion brothers and sisters, none of them will be exactly like you. Everyone will be unique and different from each other.

Purpose of Uniqueness

God in his infinite wisdom did not create us to be completely identical to each other. I think one reason God made us unique is that He assigns us to do a particular job which only we can do. Imagine what the world will be if we were created to be identical and to perform the same task.

Beware of Imitation

In Hosea 4:6, God said: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” One big mistake we normally make is that we struggle to be like others. We don’t want to be seen as one among millions. We want to do what everyone else is doing. We want to follow the crowd so that we will not be labelled as nonconformists.

As a result of this, we struggle in vain to be like others. We spend hours, days, months and years imitating others with the hope that we will one day become like them, but we never become like them.

This is because when we copy or imitate others, the best we can be is second rate to the person we are imitating. We can never be like any person no matter how long and hard we try. When we copy others and become second rate, we cease being the best that God wants us to be.

God wants us to be the best that he created us to be. And the only way to be the best that He wants us to be is to be ourselves. We should stop copying others and start focusing on our own potentials. The issue is not trying to be a replica of another, but doing what you know best to do. THE SECRET OF LIVING A SUCCESSFUL AND FULFILLED LIFE IS TO FOCUS ON YOUR STRENGTH. 

Look for that spark of originality that makes you unique and different and develop yourself along that line. It was Art Williams that said: “All you can do is all you can do.” What matters is what YOU can do; not what others can do.

Forget about other people’s exploits and achievement. Don’t imitate   any person. You may learn from others, but you don’t have to copy everything they do. Look for what you know best and plant yourself there doing it.

Success comes from doing what you know best to do. When you study the lives of super stars, you will discover that they do what they know best to do. No person becomes a super star doing something he does not know how to do.

Overcoming Hindrances to Being the Best God Wants You to Be            

While striving to be the best that God wants you to be, the major hindrance you will encounter is the pressure to do what everybody is doing, and becoming what everybody is becoming.

The pressure is everywhere – in the family, educational institutions, organizations, societies, clubs, etc. The more you try to be yourself, the higher the pressure you will face.

Rejection, social ostracism and excommunication are the weapons the society uses to frustrate those who try to stand out of the crowd.  But ironically, these weapons are the motivation you need to stand out of the crowd and be yourself. The likes of Mandela, Martin Luther, Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, etc have experienced ostracism and overcome it.

Every super successful person had at one time experienced rejection and overcame it. One Nigerian who experienced rejection and overcame it is Buchi Atuonwu, a multi talented gospel reggae artist. Buchi, as he is fondly called by his fans, narrated in an interview how a Christian ministry invited him to sing at a crusade. As he sang, the crowd went gaga. The people lifted up their hands and danced with him.

Suddenly, a voice roared: “Where did you bring this Rasta from? I asked for a gospel artiste. Why did you bring me a Rastafarian? Send him away. Cut the sound.”

As Buchi was still singing, they switched off the sound and pushed him away in the full glare of the people. Humiliated, he walked away with members of his band.

However, years later, the same people who drove him away from the stage, invited him to come and sing the songs to them at their meeting. And he did!

Recounting the experience, he said: “Thank God that I was not embarrassed enough to be angry.”

Lessons You Must Learn to Stand Out and Be Yourself

Below are lessons you must learn to stand  out  in life and be different:

1.   Understand that God Did Not Make a Mistake in Making You Different. God made you unique and deposited in you unique abilities to enable you stand out and be outstanding.

2.    Your success, happiness and fulfillment are anchored on the talents God bestowed on you. Your talents are what you know best to do. You cannot shine when you copy what others are doing. But, when you do what you know best to do, you will shine like stars in the firmament. So, discover your God-given talent, develop and deploy if for your greatness and fulfillment. 
 

3.   Never let any person talk you out of your area of strength. Many people will not agree with what you are doing, but that does not mean what you are doing is bad or wrong. The fact that some people don’t approve of what you are doing does not mean you are wayward or that they are better than you. Most times, it is better to stand alone than to be carried away with the madding crowd. If you go with the crowd, you can go wrong. But if you follow your inner conviction, you cannot go wrong. It is your conscience and the Almighty God that will judge you, not the crowd. The approval of men is irrelevant. What is important is God’s approval and you own approval. Ensure that you are not doing what displeases God. Ensure also that you are doing what you know best to do.

4.   Choose to be yourself, no matter the pressure to make you do what others are doing. Many people are made to believe that it is only what people approve of that is good. But that is not always true. People who are guided by this belief always end up as mediocre. You don’t have to follow the crowd always. Think your own thoughts and be yourself.

5.   When you choose to be different, you will meet with oppositions. But that should not make you to conform with others. Don’t be afraid of rejections, ostracism and excommunication, because they are the motivation and the tonic you need to stand out and be different.

6.   “God does not want us to be buffaloes which run with the herds,” says Norman Vincent Peale, “He wants us to be eagles, which fly alone.” Be a flier and not a runner. And the way to be a flier is to be yourself, stand out and be different.

7.   The crowd can go wrong, but never go wrong with the crowd. Two wrongs, they say, cannot make a right. Always expect that people will provoke you to anger, but learn to control yourself as much as you can. When you are angry, don’t overreact. In order not to lose your temper, sometimes, it is wise to walk away from those provoking you. 

8.   And last but not the least, learn to forgive those who offend you. This is the foundation of Christianity. You cannot claim to owe allegiance to Christ, if you cannot forgive those who offend you. Jesus died so that our sins can be forgiven. We have no choice, we must forgive others. It is God’s commandment. On forgiveness, Jesus said: “For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”  (Matt. 6:14-15).

As I round off, I urge you to dare to be different. Be unique. Do what you know best to do regardless of the pressures to make you do what others are doing. This is the only way you can become the best that God wants you to be!

Victorious Living through Positive Thinking

The Power of Positive thinking, a bestselling motivational book written by Norman Vincent Peale, is one of the best motivational books I have read over the years. Peale’s other bestseller titled, The Amazing Results of Positive Thinking, is another motivational book I cherish till today.

I have also been  a subscriber to PLUS, a positive  thinking  magazine which Peale center for Christian Living, New York, kept  sending  to me free of  charge via postal service  for years. I sought to practice what he taught in his publications. The result is that his teachings helped me to cultivate faith in God, in myself and in life. And this is what you need to be victorious in life.

I say confidently that no one who practices Peale’s teaching on positive thinking will ever be frustrated, defeated and beaten in the game of life. Not necessarily that his teaching will make you the richest man on earth, but it will empower you face life’s challenges and overcome them.

From the Shelf to the Bestseller List

The success story of The Power of Positive Thinking is a practical demonstration of the efficacy of Peale’s teachings. Peale completed the manuscript in 1952 and the same year, he took it to an editor for publication. By then, it was titled, The Power of Faith. After reading through the manuscript, the editor said that it wasn’t any good and that Peale should rather divide the manuscript into sections or into the days of the week.

Peale later collected his manuscript and dumped it in a shelf in a closet. One day, he brought it out and started cutting it into sections and putting it in boxes.  Ruth Stafford Peale, his wife, discouraged him from mutilating the manuscript. Instead, she took it to another publisher, Myron Boardman of Prentice Hall, USA, who read it and said: “This is a very good book, but the title isn’t good.”

He suggested that the book be titled, “The Power of Positive Thinking” instead of “The Power of Faith,” a phrase that is littered on the pages of the book, which Peale wasn’t conscious of.

The Power of Positive Thinking was later published and it sold like   a hot cake worldwide. 63 years after the first printing, The Power of Positive Thinking is still a bestseller! The best thing about The Power of Positive Thinking is that it has helped changed lives of millions of people and it is still changing lives.

Three lessons for Victorious Living

Let me share with you briefly three lessons I learned from the success story of The Power of Positive Thinking:

1.   He Who Serves Never Lack

If you are out to sincerely serve humanity, to help humanity to grow, you will never lack. Peale’s motivational and spiritual service earned him fame and fortune. It is not how far you pursue fame and fortune, but how far you serve humanity.

Peale’s The Power of Positive Thinking alone fetched him millions of dollars, not even to talk of dozens of his other books. Fame and  fortune will come, if you can focus on serving humanity by helping  people solve a particular problem worldwide.

2.   Do the Best You Can

Anything worth doing is worth doing well. When you want to embark on any worthwhile project, make sure you give it the best you can. Peale gave the best he could in writing The Power of Positive Thinking. Once you are convinced that you have given it the best you could, you just have to relax. The rest will take care of itself.

3.   Don’t Let negative Opinion Destroy Your Good Works

The fact is, just as our faces are different, so also is our opinion and perspective about all issues of life. So, you should not expect that people will have the same opinion about what you do.

There are people who will never see anything good about anything. Their focus is always on the negative. Even if they take notice of the positive aspect or the greater good about anything, they would try to downplay it and instead, dwell MOST on the negative.

These set of people will give you a thousand and one reasons why a particular thing will not work, but they will not give you just one reason why a particular thing will work. You should be mindful of this kind of people. And when such people come to express their negative opinion, just ignore them and treat it as their own opinion and not yours.  If you are convinced that you have given the best you could, then, what matters most to you is your own opinion and not the opinion of any person.

Why It Doesn’t Make Sense to Be Pessimistic (3)

Welcome to part 3 of this article. In part 2, we discussed the second leg of the principle of sowing and reaping, which borders on planting/investing on a fertile soil and remaining planted there for the long haul.

Now, here in this final part of the article, we are discussing the third leg of the principle of sowing and reaping, which borders on tending your plant.

Tending Your Plant

It is not enough to plant/invest on a fertile soil; it is also important that you tend what you plant/invest. Every successful farmer knows that planting on a fertile soil alone does not guarantee bumper harvest. What guarantees bumper harvest is tending the crops you have planted.

If all a farmer needs do to succeed is to plant his crops and go to sleep until the crops are matured before he comes to harvest them, every farmer would be successful and many more people will want to venture into farming.

At the beginning of every winter or rainy season, it is easier for every farmer to plant, but it is not easy for every farmer to tend his plants. As the plants grow, they grow alongside weeds and pests. To ensure bumper harvest, it is the responsibility of the farmer to control both weeds and the pests.

What separates a successful farmer from the unsuccessful one is his ability to control the weeds and pests that are struggling to choke and destroy the plants.

Dear reader, you may not be a farmer, but the fact is: there are vital lessons you can learn from the analogy of the farmer and his crop planting activities. It is not enough to establish a business, trade or vocation. It is also important that you manage your business effectively.

As your business grows, there are “weeds and pests” that will grow alongside your business. It is your responsibility to control the weeds and pests. “Weeds and pests” represent all the things that can outgrow your business and choke it up. The lists of weeds and pests that can destroy your business are inexhaustible. Most of them are so tiny that at the moment they look harmless, but at the end of the day, they will turn out to be the “little foxes that destroy the vines.”

In his book, WALKING IN FINANCIAL FREEDOM, Engineer (Pastor) Samson Makinwa narrated the story of a doctor who started his clinic from a small apartment. Within a short time, he had moved into a flat. His medical practice was growing fast. He bought several cars and he was living fine.

But there were “weeds and pests” that were growing with his fast growing hospital, which he had been overlooking. The doctor had an uncontrollable sexual appetite. He used to sleep with his female employees. He equally used to sleep with the patients in his hospital and in return, he would cancel their medical bills.

These patients would also go and tell their female friends how nice the doctor was. The doctor would treat them and they would say they didn’t have the money to pay their bills. The doctor would sleep with them and cancel their debts. These “weeds and pests” continued to choke the doctor’s hospital until he sold off his cars and other assets and returned to square one.       

There is a great lesson to learn here. To this doctor, those medical bills meant little to him. If he traded the medical bills for endless rounds of sexual pleasure, they would not affect his business.

But he was wrong! Unknown to him, the “weeds and pests” were even growing faster than his hospital. His insatiable sexual appetites were the weeds and pests that chocked his fast growing hospital.

Devising a Strategy for Business Success

Dear friend, there is no assurance of success, if you don’t tend your plant (manage your business). A successful farmer does not joke with the weeds and pests that are growing with his plants. He knows that if he allowed them, they would choke up his plants and he would have little or nothing to harvest that year.

In order to ensure bumper harvest, the farmer would devise strategy for controlling the weeds and pests. It is either he goes for herbicides and pesticides or he employs farm labourers or himself to clear the weeds that are growing with his plants. And once the weeds are cleared, the chances of the pests growing and multiplying are reduced to the barest minimum.

What strategy are you devising to control the “weeds and pests” that are growing with your business? The fact is: if you overlook the “weeds and pests,” they would run down your business. They would not stop growing as long as your business is growing. They may appear insignificant at the moment, but if you overlook them, they will destroy your business.

The bane of many of us is laziness. After setting up our business, we become complacent. We feel there is no other thing to do anymore. We fail to realize that the task of managing our business is on us. We all know that we must promote, market and manage our business, but we are doing little or nothing about it.

Proverbs 12:27 says: “The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.” The weed of laziness is a killer of businesses. Businesses are not for lazy people. If you are not willing to work and manage your business, you may end up running down your business.

Starting from staff punctuality, production, financing, sales and marketing, accounting, through to customer service, there must be effective supervision and proper management.

When a problem comes up, how long does it take you to solve it? Where necessary, do you consult experts to get the problem solved? Management is fundamental to the success of your business just as control of weeds and pests are fundamental to the success of every farmer.

Finally, when it comes to sowing and reaping, it doesn’t make sense to be pessimistic about it. When you sow, you reap what you sow. It all depends on your effort and perseverance.

Note also that it is not enough to sow; you must sow in a fertile soil, and you must equally tend your plants. And when applying this principle in our business, we should establish a business which we have confirmed that it is lucrative. We should also effectively manage our business.

WHEN YOU FOLLOW THIS PRINCIPLE OF SOWING AND REAPING, YOU HAVE NO CAUSE TO BE PESSIMISTIC, AS EVERYTHING WILL WORK OUT FOR YOU IN THE END.
