Why It Doesn’t Make Sense to Be Pessimistic (3)

Welcome to part 3 of this article. In part 1, we discussed the first leg of the principle of sowing and reaping, which borders on planting/investing as a prerequisite for high Returns on Investments (ROI). In part 2, we discussed the second leg of the principle of sowing and reaping, which borders on planting/investing on a fertile soil and remaining planted there for the long haul.

Now, here in this final part of the article, we are discussing the third leg of the principle of sowing and reaping, which borders on tending your plant.

Tending Your Plant

It is not enough to plant/invest on a fertile soil; it is also important that you tend what you plant/invest. Every successful farmer knows that planting on a fertile soil alone does not guarantee bumper harvest. What guarantees bumper harvest is tending the crops you have planted.

If all a farmer needs do to succeed is to plant his crops and go to sleep until the crops are matured before he comes to harvest them, every farmer would be successful and many more people will want to venture into farming.

At the beginning of every winter or rainy season, it is easier for every farmer to plant, but it is not easy for every farmer to tend his plants. As the plants grow, they grow alongside weeds and pests. To ensure bumper harvest, it is the responsibility of the farmer to control both weeds and the pests.

What separates a successful farmer from the unsuccessful one is his ability to control the weeds and pests that are struggling to choke and destroy the plants.

Dear reader, you may not be a farmer, but the fact is: there are vital lessons you can learn from the analogy of the farmer and his crop planting activities. It is not enough to establish a business, trade or vocation. It is also important that you manage your business effectively.

As your business grows, there are “weeds and pests” that will grow alongside your business. It is your responsibility to control the weeds and pests. “Weeds and pests” represent all the things that can outgrow your business and choke it up. The lists of weeds and pests that can destroy your business are inexhaustible. Most of them are so tiny that at the moment they look harmless, but at the end of the day, they will turn out to be the “little foxes that destroy the vines.”

In his book, WALKING IN FINANCIAL FREEDOM, Engineer (Pastor) Samson Makinwa narrated the story of a doctor who started his clinic from a small apartment. Within a short time, he had moved into a flat. His medical practice was growing fast. He bought several cars and he was living fine.

But there were “weeds and pests” that were growing with his fast growing hospital, which he had been overlooking. The doctor had an uncontrollable sexual appetite. He used to sleep with his female employees. He equally used to sleep with the patients in his hospital and in return, he would cancel their medical bills.

These patients would also go and tell their female friends how nice the doctor was. The doctor would treat them and they would say they didn’t have the money to pay their bills. The doctor would sleep with them and cancel their debts. These “weeds and pests” continued to choke the doctor’s hospital until he sold off his cars and other assets and returned to square one.       

There is a great lesson to learn here. To this doctor, those medical bills meant little to him. If he traded the medical bills for endless rounds of sexual pleasure, they would not affect his business.

But he was wrong! Unknown to him, the “weeds and pests” were even growing faster than his hospital. His insatiable sexual appetites were the weeds and pests that chocked his fast growing hospital.

Devising a Strategy for Business Success

Dear friend, there is no assurance of success, if you don’t tend your plant (manage your business). A successful farmer does not joke with the weeds and pests that are growing with his plants. He knows that if he allowed them, they would choke up his plants and he would have little or nothing to harvest that year.

In order to ensure bumper harvest, the farmer would devise strategy for controlling the weeds and pests. It is either he goes for herbicides and pesticides or he employs farm labourers or himself to clear the weeds that are growing with his plants. And once the weeds are cleared, the chances of the pests growing and multiplying are reduced to the barest minimum.

What strategy are you devising to control the “weeds and pests” that are growing with your business? The fact is: if you overlook the “weeds and pests,” they would run down your business. They would not stop growing as long as your business is growing. They may appear insignificant at the moment, but if you overlook them, they will destroy your business.

The bane of many of us is laziness. After setting up our business, we become complacent. We feel there is no other thing to do anymore. We fail to realize that the task of managing our business is on us. We all know that we must promote, market and manage our business, but we are doing little or nothing about it.

Proverbs 12:27 says: “The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious.” The weed of laziness is a killer of businesses. Businesses are not for lazy people. If you are not willing to work and manage your business, you may end up running down your business.

Starting from staff punctuality, production, financing, sales and marketing, accounting, through to customer service, there must be effective supervision and proper management.

When a problem comes up, how long does it take you to solve it? Where necessary, do you consult experts to get the problem solved? Management is fundamental to the success of your business just as control of weeds and pests are fundamental to the success of every farmer.

Finally, when it comes to sowing and reaping, it doesn’t make sense to be pessimistic about it. When you sow, you reap what you sow. It all depends on your effort and perseverance.

Note also that it is not enough to sow; you must sow in a fertile soil, and you must equally tend your plants. And when applying this principle in our business, we should establish a business which we have confirmed that it is lucrative. We should also effectively manage our business.

WHEN YOU FOLLOW THIS PRINCIPLE OF SOWING AND REAPING, YOU HAVE NO CAUSE TO BE PESSIMISTIC, AS EVERYTHING WILL WORK OUT FOR YOU IN THE END.

How Celine Dion Sang Her Way to Stardom

Celine Dion is undoubtedly one of the world’s most successful and popular artists. This French-Canadian, whose albums sold over 50 million copies worldwide, is obviously a pop icon that continues to dazzle the world with her singing talent.

As early as age 5, Celine has started singing with her family and at age 12, she composed her first song. Like a journey of a thousand miles, she sang and performed in French language for more than a decade, yet without much impact on the world.

In order to achieve “global phenomenal popularity,” she opted to sing in English language. And to do so, she had to learn English language. That was in 1988. Deon who began her career as a recording artist is now a living legend on planet earth!

Of this great music icon, Polly Anthony, president of 550 Music (a division of Sony Music Canada), Dion’s label, remarked: “There’s talent and there’s talent. Her ambition, her drive, and the sacrifices she makes on a daily basis for her career, for her voice, for fans – that’s what really pushes her over the top.”

Dion’s rise to stardom began when her family sent her song tape to a producer called Rene Angelil Dion. When the producer watched celine sing on tape, he was so taken with her captivating voice that he mortgaged his house in order to finance her career. Both Celine and Dion later got married. This couple also had a chain of 25 restaurants in Quebeck, Canada. 

Like this pop icon, we also can reach the apex of our career. We live in the world of possibilities and as such, there is no goal we set for ourselves that we cannot achieve, provided we are willing to take the necessary steps.

The word of Sidney Bremer is relevant in this regard. According to him: “There is no surer way along the road to success than to follow in the footsteps of those who have journeyed before us.”

Below are four steps you can take to achieve great success in your career:

1.   Get Rid of the Idea of becoming Rich Overnight

One big obstacle we must remove if we are going to achieve mega success in life is the idea of quick success. In this jet age, people want to make it overnight. They keep looking for short-cut, and if they cannot find it, they quit.

Perhaps, as you are reading this article, you might have been struggling to achieve certain goal and despite all your efforts, success seems to be a mirage. And now, you are trying to throw in the towel.

But listen: There is nothing like overnight success. Nobody succeeds overnight. Truly successful people become successful through years of toiling and moiling. Celine Dion is not an exception. For over a decade, she performed in French without much impact on the world. But later, she became a mega star.

There is a big lesson here: if you realize that success is not accomplished overnight and you are ready to give it what it takes, you will achieve the success you desire.

O yes, success may take longer than you expect. It may take many years. But the fact is, as long as you keep working towards achieving your goal, without allowing any circumstance to discourage you, you will certainly achieve your goal.

2.   Success Requires Daily Sacrifice

If success can be achieved overnight, then, there would be no need to make much effort towards achieving it. Success demands sacrifice and if we are going to make it big in life, we must be ready to make the necessary sacrifices.

For Dion, the story is not different. She made daily sacrifices for her career, her voice and her fans. It is not enough to be gifted or talented. Everybody is blessed with talents. We are all capable of achieving great success with our talents, but how we improve and utilize our talent, determines the height we can reach in life.

To achieve mega success, we must constantly develop our talents on a daily basis. We must keep doing anything that will help move us closer to success.

3.   Success Requires Patience

 Dion’s success story reveals that she did not become successful overnight. She worked her way from oblivion to stardom. He who has patience will always have her way eventually. All successful people have this sterling quality of patience in common. It takes much patience to keep putting in more effort despite repeated failures.

It is in time of excruciating defeat that you will know those that are destined for success. It is how you react when success seems to be far from sight that determines whether you will succeed or not.

Abraham Lincoln once said: “My great concern is not whether you have failed, but whether you are content with your failure.” Contentment with failure is always the path to failure. But the path to greater height is patience in times of adversity.

If you are impatient, success will continue to elude you. You might be very close to success, but because of impatience, you give up. People who give up are impatient people. In fact, most failures are attributable to impatience.

Impatient people are people who allow unpleasant situations to discourage them. Such people cannot endure hard times. They fail to realize that that the road to stardom is patience. Patience is what we need to exercise to get to stardom.

For over a decade, Deon sang without much impact. But she did not quit. She kept singing. It takes patience and much of it to keep on forging ahead even when success seems far from sight.

Like Dion, you don’t have to quit. Success may take longer time than you expect. If you can exercise patience and keep working hard towards the accomplishment of your goal, you will reach the goal you have set for yourself.

4.   Market Yourself

 Marketing is a scary word to some people. Marketing is the last thing such people will venture into. But the fact is, whether we like it or not, marketing is the determining factor for our success in any field of human endeavour.

“Ah,” but you may say, “In my own field (profession), no practitioner is allowed to advertise and promote himself and his business.” Well, my response is this: if you enquire critically, you will discover that there is no law or rule that forbids advertisement in its entirety. What the law frowns upon is INDECENT advertisement. Touting, soliciting and any advertisement that tend to bring dishonor to the profession, may be frown upon by law.

The problem we have is with interpretation of laws or rules. No will bound advertising outright. If you don’t advertise and promote your business, products/services, how do you think you can grow and reach out to people who need your products/services?

Even the banks have their marketing department and usually send their staff out occasionally to embark on their marketing campaign. Of course, if you are a professional – legal practitioner, accountant, engineer, pharmacist – you cannot advertise the way others are advertising.

Your advert may not be as lousy, elaborate or aggressive as those of many companies and businesses, but one of sober and moderate style. You should learn from Dion’s story. Having discovered and developed her talent, she did not sit at home waiting for music producers and managers to look for her. Dion’s family packaged her son tape and took it to a music producer.

That was how Dion was discovered. The music producer listened to her song and wasted no time in bringing Dion to limelight. Regardless of your talent, knowledge and skill, you still have to market yourself. If you don’t market (advertise and promote) yourself and business, nobody will know anything about you and your business.

If you will not market yourself and business, don’t set up your business. The key to your success is MARKETING. Market youself in a decent way and in a manner that is approved by the rules of ethics of your profession. When people know that you are there and that you offer quality products/services, you will be well on your way to stardom.

On the whole, like Dion, you can achieve great success in life if you establish in your mind the fact that:

1.   Success is not achieved overnight;

2.   Success requires daily sacrifice;

3.   Success requires patience; and

4.   Success in any business is anchored on Marketing
