Power of Dreams: The Honda Story!

Dreams are powerful! There is a popular parlance in the field of motivation which says: “If you can dream it, you can achieve it.”

Dreams are those goals that you are wishing, working and waiting to achieve. They are those things you wish and pray that they happen.  

Dreams are intangible, but they are real. They are indication of what you are capable of becoming or achieving. Dreams do come to pass if you care enough to hope, pray, work and wait for them to materialize.

What are those things you have been pursuing and putting in your best to achieve but have not yet achieved? The word of assurance is that you can achieve whatever you want to achieve. You can reach the height you have set for yourself.  

The story of Soichiro Honda is very illustrative in this regard. When Honda set out to invent motorcycle, people advised him in his own interest never to try it as he would fail. He ignored them and went ahead to experiment. He actually failed many a time. 

Honda once applied to work for Toyota Motor Corporation, a household name in the auto manufacturing company. He was called for interview, but they refused to employ him because they said he was not qualified for the job.

Honda focused on his goal of inventing a motorcycle and after many trials and failures, he eventually succeeded in inventing motorcycle. He did not rest on his oars, but kept innovating and eventually he branched out into manufacturing cars. Today, his company, Honda Corporation,  is competing with Toyota Motor Corporation, the same Toyota he earlier applied to work for, which refused to  employ him on the ground that he was not qualified to work for the company.

Dear friend, dreams are powerful and no matter the size of your dream, if you can hold tenaciously to it, and do the best you can, you will surely end up making your dream come true. 

Below are three steps you must take to achieve any goal you set for yourself:

1.   Be Fully Convinced  

If you are not fully convinced about what you want to achieve, it is very easy to compromise. It is one thing to have a dream, but it is quite another to be fully convinced that you can achieve your dream.

Conviction is the starting point to making your dream come true. Before you get yourself committed, it is important that you sit down to ask yourself whether what you want to achieve is another person’s dream or your own dream. Do you prefer that others should dictate to you the dream you must pursue and achieve? Or are you willing to follow and pursue your own dream?

Following your dream is following your heart. Following your heart is following your convinction. And remember: You can make your dream come true even if nobody believes you can, but if you don’t believe in yourself, you cannot realize your dream even if others believe you can.  

So, your own conviction is the key to making your dream come true. Make sure you are fully convinced before you step out to follow and pursue your dream.

2.   Be Focused

Andrew Carnegie once said: “One great cause of the failure of young men in business is the lack of concentration.”

We have much more distractions these days than there were several decades ago. The internet has ushered in networking on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, What’s App, Instagram, etc, which is okay, but when you spend greater proportion of your time networking on social media platforms instead of focusing on achieving your dream, you are not likely going to make your dream come true.

To make your dream come true, spend greater proportion of your time doing those things that will keep moving you closer and closer to realising your dream. Always shun anything that will not contribute meaningfully towards helping you make your dream come true.

3.   Ignore Negative Opinion of Others

Honda was warned in his own interest that he should not attempt to invent motorcycle as he would fail. Honda ignored the negative opinion of his friends, relations and others. He kept doing the best he could and he eventually invented motorcycle. MOST OF THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE WORLD COULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED IF THE INVENTORS LISTENED TO THE NEGATIVE OPINIONS OF PEOPLE AND QUIT.

Between the negative opinion of others and your own positive opinion, it is your own positive opinion that is paramount. People sincerely but ignorantly thought that Honda could not invent motorcycle, but Honda strongly believed he could.

As far as your capability is concerned, no one knows what you are capable of becoming or doing. Only your own positive opinion about your capability will unleash the unlimited potentials within you.

If you want to stand out and be outstanding on this terrestrial ball, the only voice you must listen to is your own voice. Never listen to any voice that tells you that you cannot make it in life. Ignore any negative opinion, regardless of whose mouth the opinion is coming from.

Learn to follow your heart. You will only fulfill other people’s dream, if you allow them to tell you what you are capable of becoming and doing. The fact is, no one knows what you are capable of.

But if you follow your conviction, if you are focused, if you keep ignoring the negative opinion of others and you keep holding unto your own positive opinion about your capability, and you keep doing the best you can, you will surely end up making your dream come true.
