How Faith in God Can Take You from Nowhere to Stardom!

Each time he scored a goal, for the soccer club that he played for and for Nigerian national soccer team,
he celebrated with his two arms stretched upward and his two index fingers pointing upward.

Yes, it’s been jubilation galore, but it was not so decades back for prolific goal poacher, Odion Jude Ighalo.

Ighalo who plays for English soccer club, Watford Football Club (FC) has demonstrated that if you are willing to follow your heart, if you are willing to develop your talent, and if you are willing to work and pray hard, you can move from nowhere and become a super star in your chosen career.

Born in Lagos State on June 16, 1989, Ighalo began his soccer career with Prime FC, a local soccer team in Nigeria and later moved to Julius Berger FC in Lagos, Nigeria. It was while playing for Julius Berger FC that a FIFA Agent discovered him. He was taken on trial by Lyn FC of Norway.

He made his debut in 2007 at the age of 18 scoring in a 2-0 win against Viking FK. He scored 6 goals in 13 games in his second year to move his team to the 7^th position.

The 6ft 2 inch super striker joined Watford FC of England on July 29, 2014 and in March 2015 after putting in series of outstanding performances, Daniel Amokachi, the then Nigeria national soccer team (Super Eagles) coach selected him for the first time. Since then, he has been featuring regularly for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

One of the outstanding qualities that catapulted him to stardom is his industry. According to www.takemetonaija.com, “Odion is quite not from a silver spoon family. Odion is the kind of player who hustled a lot to reach where he is.”

Though at the pinnacle of his career, Ighalo who is known to be a devoted Christian is quite unlike some who achieved fame and fortune and forgot where they came from. Ighalo still remembers where he comes from. 

In a past interview, he shared his past: “Life in Ajegunle was tough (Ajegunle is one of the slums in Lagos State, Nigeria), we had no idea what the future hold but we would wake up every morning content with the opportunity of another day.

“I’m the youngest (with twin sister, Juliet) in a family of seven. We hoped for a better life. We would stand by the canal, look across it and pray for a miracle that will take us out of the ghetto.

“The little house we lived in was built by my father and he made sure we didn’t starve like other kids.

“Growing up, we kicked cans, oranges and plastic bags on the street. If we were lucky, someone would bring a plastic ball for three-a-side.

“You didn’t need extra motivation to succeed when you are born into the hardship and struggles of the ghetto.

When asked the advice he would give to upcoming players, he said: "I want to tell them to keep working and praying hard. I was like that too. I believe in God and He helped me. They should believe in themselves and I pray their time will come soon."

Leverage: A Key Factor for Achieving the Incredible

Leverage is simply the ability to capitalize on anything, situation or event to your advantage. The fact about life is that anything – the good, the bad, the ugly – can be used as a lever to achieve the incredible.

I have come to realize that even failure – something that some people see as a misfortune – can be be leveraged upon to accomplish outstanding success.

The impact of India in the field of Space Exploration lends credence to the fact that failure can be leveraged upon. India is the first country to make FIRST ATTEMPT into Space and succeed. The secret of India’s incredible success is not far-fetched. They leveraged the failures of pioneer countries like USA, Russia, Japan, China, etc.

How to Leverage Failures to Achieve Incredible Success

How did India leverage the failures of pioneer space exploring countries to achieve success at first attempt?  And how can you apply it to achieve outstanding success in your own chosen endeavour?

Below are three steps for leveraging failures to achieve incredible success:

1.   Learn from Failures

Failure can be a great leverage (asset) if you know how to leverage it for your good. More often than not, great success will not come until you learn from your failures and the failures of others.

One importance of failure is that it teaches us how not to go about achieving a particular goal. It shows us ways that will not lead us to where we want to go. It directs us to take a detour rather than a dead end.

For a long time, the likes of USA, Russia, Japan and China kept laboring to find ways of getting into Space. In the process, they adopted “trial and error” method. They failed a lot. They lost human and material resources, kept trying and failing until they discover ways of getting into Space.

When India wanted to explore the Space, they did not jump out to adopt a trial and error method the way USA, Russia, Japan and China did. They know that doing so would take them a long time to achieve their goal. Rather, they sought a faster way of getting into Space. They discovered that the fastest way of getting into Space at first attempt was to learn from the failures of pioneer countries that had gone there before them.

India studied everything the pioneer countries did that did not work. And these studies became an aggregation of signposts that warned them never to take those paths.

How faster our journey to success will be if we spend quality time learning from our failures and failures of others. Let failures become subjects of research to you. If you have been failing, take your time to study those things you did that didn’t work. Look at the lives of those who have gone ahead of you and who had failed previously. What were those things they did that didn’t work? If you can spend quality time studying what did not work, you stand a chance of fast-tracking your jouney to success.

2.   Avoid What Will Not Work

The world’s number one motivator, Ziz Ziglar, once said: “Failure is not a dead end but a detour.” I think what this implies is that failure helps us to avoid what will not work.

One of the causes of failures of many is that they kept doing what they had been doing that didn’t work, hoping that it would take them to where they want to go.

Someone once defined “Madness” as doing something consistently and hoping to achieve different result. The benefit of failure is that it teaches us what will not work and helps us to avoid them. When you learn that some methods do not work, you don’t have to keep doing them. Avoid them. By avoiding what will not work, you fasttrack your way to success.

3.   Try Other Ways

When you avoid what will not work, don’t remain stagnant. Look for other ways that might work. Adopt a liberal approach, if you want to leverage failure to achieve incredible success. Adopting a liberal approach implies welcoming new ideas, being creative and seizing every opportunity that comes your way.

Like India, as you learn from your failures and failures of others, as you avoid what will not work and try other ways, you will not only fasttrack your way to success, you will also break records that are yet to be broken.

Unbelief: the Bane of the Loser!

The problem is not that you cannot achieve your goal in life, the problem is that you are skeptical of your ability to make it or of what the future holds for you.

Many a time, we behave like a person who takes up arms, enlist himself in the camp of his enemies and wages war against himself. Although this may sound funny, in reality, this is what we do to ourselves by reason of our unbelief. It is worse as that!

I am sure you will agree with me that we all want to succeed in life and to some extent, we may even be making some effort towards achieving our goals. But at a stage, when it appears that we are not making any headway in spite of our efforts, we begin to doubt whether we will succeed in the end.

Power of Unbelief

Unbelief is as powerful as belief. It all depends on the one you allow to dominate your mind. If you allow unbelief to dominate your mind, it will shut down your brain, your abilities and potentials. When you begin to doubt your ability to succeed in life you will lose hope in life and you will not even be motivated to work towards achieving your goals.

Unbelief can be likened to the OFF button of a computer. When a computer is in full operation and you press the OFF button, it practically shuts down the computer system.

The shutting down of a computer is similar to what happens to a man who is working towards achieving his heart’s desires but gives up because of unbelief. Unbelief stifles your hope, makes you despondent, paralyses and forces you to quit. No matter how far you have gone and how close you are to success, if you allow unbelief to dominate your mind, it will shut down your brain and forces you to quit.

The bane of losers is unbelief. The Bible says: “if ye will not believe, ye will not prosper.” Anytime you feel like giving up in your pursuit of success, it could be that you have allowed unbelief to dominate your mind.

Unbelief Repels Prosperity

Belief is a magnet that attracts prosperity. The Bible says: “Believe in God and in His prophet and ye shall prosper.” Jesus equally said: “If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth” (Mark 9:29).

Unbelief, on the other hand, is the opposite of belief. Unbelief repels prosperity and keeps people in perpetual bondage of poverty. Prolific author, William Shakespeare, once said: “Our doubts are traitors and make us to lose what we oft’ might gain by fearing to attempt.”

One vivid illustration that describes how unbelief repels success is recorded in the Bible. At a particular period in the history of Israeli nation, there was severe famine, so severe that a woman in a reciprocal agreement with another woman, boiled her child and both of them ate the child. As the famine grew from bad to worse, a man of God by name Elisha declared publicly that in the next 24 hours, there would be surplus foodstuffs so much so that people would buy them cheaply.

 A top functionary in the employment of the king of Israel who heard the prophecy of Elisha doubted: “Then a lord on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if the LORD would make windows in heaven, might this thing be?” (2 Kings 7:2a).

The worst form of unbelief is the one which doubt the power of God to do ALL things. And when you have this form of unbelief, what you get always is the worst. In response to the man’s unbelief, Elisha, the man of God, prophesied against him: “Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.” (2 Kings 7:2b).

And it happened to the man exactly what Elisha declared: “And the king appointed the lord on whose hand he leaned to have the charge of the gate: and the people trode upon him in the gate, and he died, as the man of God had said, who spake when the king came down to him. And it came to pass as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, Two measures of barley for a shekel, and a measure of fine flour for a shekel, shall be to morrow about this time in the gate of Samaria:  And that lord answered the man of God, and said, Now, behold, if the LORD should make windows in heaven, might such a thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof. And so it fell out unto him: for the people trode upon him in the gate, and he died.” (2 Kings 7:17-20).

Dear reader, what is it that you allow to dominate your mind? You may not pay much attention to what you allow to dominate your mind until you begin to watch your life go the way of what is in your mind.

How to Whittle Down Unbelief and Increase Your Faith for Victory

As a result of many negative things happening to us and around us, it is very easy to allow unbelief to dominate our  mind. But one way to whittle it down is to fill our mind with faith thoughts.      

Read the Bible regularly. Read motivational books regularly. Visit this blog regularly and read our articles herein. Memorise and affirm faith-based bible verses and positive expressions that you find in the Bible, in motivational books and other publications.

The more positive affirmations you store in your mind, the more you crowd out unbelief that would try to gain entry into your mind. When your mind is dominated by positive thoughts and faith thoughts, you whittle down unbelief and increase your faith for victory.

Keep memorizing and affirming positive thoughts daily and your faith will grow bigger than your unbelief. When your faith becomes bigger than unbelief, unbelief will have no place in your mind and it will dwindle to a vanishing point.

And then, you will be empowered never to quit but to keep trying until you succeed. Remember: WINNERS NEVER QUIT AND QUITTERS NEVER WIN.
