When One Door Closes

The uncanny hand of fate has a way of reorganising or rearranging our lives for the best, though initially this reorganisation may look like a big disappointment.

Years ago, THE NEWS, a Nigerian weekly magazine, featured the success story of one of Nigeria’s greatest musicians, by stage name, NICE ( whose real name is Abolorede Akande). Nice got admission to University of Lagos, Nigeria, to study Law, but along the way, he pulled out of school because of financial constraint. In the midst of the disappointment, he took to his passion which is composing songs and singing. He developed and polished his talent in music composition through constant practcise.

To make both ends meet, he wrote and composed songs for famous Nigerian musicians. He equally focused greater proportion of his time writing and composing his own songs. When he was ready to release his blockbuster album, his album was rejected here and there by music producers and marketers.

However, the same uncanny hand fate that denied him the opportunity of studying Law in the University, later opened a door of greater opportunity for him in music. Today, Nice has amassed wealth, fame and fortune for himself in a way he would probably not have been able to do if he had studied Law and become a Lawyer.

Dear reader, are you feeling frustrated and disappointed at the moment? Let the success story of Nice inspire you. There is light at the end of the tunnel. What may look like a disappointment may not be a disappointment. It may be a blessing in disguise. There is a saying that EVERY DISAPPOINTMENT FROM GOD IS A BLESSING. What this implies is that any disappointment you encounter today, any seeming disaster or difficulty you face today can turn out to be a blessing tomorrow.

True, no condition is permanent. Every problem, every disappointment has a lifespan. There is a time for your lifting. And when it is your time to shine, nothing can hold you back. But before your time of lifting and during periods of disappointment, how do you comport yourself? How do you handle disappointment? It is easy to be discouraged and give up hope in despair, but these are destiny killers. A MAN WHO IS DESIROUS OF ACHIEVING SUCCESS IN LIFE SHOULD NOT BE DISCOURAGED BY THE DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE MOMENT.

Be optimistic. You are destined for success. Success is your birth-right. God does not create you to be a victim but a victor. As such, God expects you to confront and weather every storm in your life. God expects you to be a problem solver and not a complainer. The disappointment you face today is temporary. Bigger appointment, bigger opportunity and greater success are on the way. That is why you must not fold your arms. Stretch out your arms for greater opportunity. Look ahead for promotion and for greater glories.

Remember to always be on the lookout for big disappointments or problems; they disguise bigger and greater opportunities. In short, big disappointments come with bigger appointments. And what it takes to grab bigger appointments and opportunities is your mindset. As Reginald Mansel said, “AN OPTIMIST IS ONE WHO MAKES OPPORTUNITIES OF HIS DIFFICULTIES.”

Never use problems as an excuse. If Nice had used his inability to finance his Law school education in the university as an excuse for failure, he would not have become what he is today. There is always something you can do. If a door closes, it does not mean all other doors have been closed. It is impossible for all doors to be closed against you. God will never allow all doors to be closed against you. In God’s scheme of things, WHEN ONE DOOR CLOSES, HE OPENS ANOTHER ONE FOR YOU. This is why you must hold tenaciously to the belief that WITH GOD, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE AND THAT WHEN ONE DOOR CLOSES, ANOTHER DOOR WILL BE OPENED FOR YOU.

And finally, I leave you with this quote: "ON YOUR WAY UP, ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT REJECTION COMES BEFORE ELEVATION."

Until I come your way soon, go and live victoriously!

Understanding Times and Seasons

“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven…” (Eccl. 3:1-8)

Just as there is a time and season for everything under heaven, there is an appointed time for the fulfillment of your destiny. The appointed time may not be the one you choose for yourself. Sometimes, things may not go the way you plan. Circumstances may arise that will either shorten or prolong the time of accomplishment of your goal.

This goes to show that aside your choice of time to fulfill your heart’s desire, there is an appointed time to fulfill your destiny. And until that time comes, all your efforts may be of no avail. When you understand that there is a time and season for everything under the heaven, you will not be puzzled by the vicissitudes of life.

People who understand times and seasons are never puzzled when they fail to fulfill their dreams at their own appointed time. They are aware that there are times of prosperity and there are times of adversity.

The fact about life is that life is never constant. What this implies is that things will not go well or bad with you all the time. No matter how long a particular circumstance – positive or negative – lasts, there will come a turnaround. If you are expecting that things will go well with you all the time, you may be kidding.

Beware of Vulnerable Times

Vulnerable times are times when things don’t go the way you want. They are times when you pray and the answers seem not forthcoming. They are times you work, work and work with little results to show for it. They are times you look for a job but you can’t find any. They are times you do all the adverts, marketing, promos and employ your salesmanship skills but only get low or no patronage.

Those times are delicate times indeed. They are delicate times because they are the times you fall prey to all sorts of negative thoughts from you and from others.

Beware of Negative Suggestions

Vulnerable times are times when your faith in God will be tested to the core. They are times when the amount of negative suggestions around you supersedes the amount of positive suggestions. At such times, if your faith is not deeply rooted in God, you would be swept away by the flood of negativity.

Vulnerable times are times when people fall prey to false prophets. They fall prey easily because they are desperate for quick solution. False prophets would brainwash them to the extent that they become zombie, not able to think and act on their own except what the false prophets instruct them to do and believe.

False prophets would give them a thousand and one causes of their problem without leading them to God. False prophets would assure them that they have solution to their problems, but alas, they end up worsening their situation. No wonder, Almighty God said: “Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departheth from the Lord…” (Jer. 17:5-6).

When you start trusting in man instead of God, it is an indication that you have taken the path of doom. No man can help you more than God. In fact, no man can help you unless God raises him up to help you. You have equal access to God like any person. Some are brainwashed and made to believe that without a particular man or woman, they cannot access the throne of grace. This is absolute falsehood.

God is no respecter of persons. He does not turn away any person that comes to Him. The problem we have is impatience. We don’t want to wait for God’s time. We are made to believe that if we do not succeed at the same time with others, it is a curse.

Understand the Working of God’s Plan for Your Life

We are not ignorant of the activities of the devil and his cohorts in causing misfortunes and delays in people’s lives. Many lives have been ruined by misfortunes and delays caused by the devil and his cohorts.

People who choose to trust men instead of God, will always fall prey to the onslaught of the devil and his cohorts. Such people will keep ascribing more powers to the devil than to God. But those who trust God know that nothing can happen to them without God’s permission. They know that everything that happens to them is part of God’s plan for their lives.

Romans 8: 28 says: “All things work together for good to them that love God who are the called according to His purpose.” Note that the verse says: “ALL THINGS.” Not “some things,” not “good things only,” not “bad things only,” but “ALL THINGS” the good, the bad and the ugly!

If you are expecting that everything must go well with you all the time, or that because you believe in God, you will never have problems, it may be that you have not fully understood times and seasons of life. Whether we believe in God or not, we will have our fair share of problems. And these problems confront us, not necessarily because of our sins, the sins of our ancestors, or because of our unbelief.

I think the better explanation is that WE ARE HAVING PROBLEMS BECAUSE PROBLEMS ARE PART OF LIFE. Eccl. 7:14 says: “In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after Him.” This implies that God permits both prosperity and adversity to exist and it is our responsibility to take both in our strides.

The path to victorious living is believing that ALL THINGS – the good, the bad and the ugly, work together for our good. Life may not be a bed of roses, but you can be victorious over challenges. You can go through life with your head held high, without being beaten and battered. You can triumph over adversities. The secret is in trusting God. Jeremiah 17: 7-8 says: “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when the heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.”

As you walk through life with faith in God and with full understanding of the times and seasons of life, you will never fall prey to the enemies, but will be victorious now and always!

Moving Beyond Punctuation of Life

Punctuation refers to marks or signs used in writing which divide sentences and phrases to make writing readable and easy to understand. Punctuation is meant to interrupt sentences and phrases in any literary work, but they do not disrupt or disorganise an entire literary work. Imagine what a literary work will be if it is not littered with punctuation marks. A piece of writing devoid of punctuation marks is likened to a pot of soup without salt. Just as salt is meant to season the food we eat, even so punctuation is meant to season our writing and make it tasty and palatable.

Like any high quality literary work, life is replete with punctuation. Punctuation of life refers to those things that interrupt our activities and progress in life. In as much as we want our activities and projects to progress without a hitch, we cannot really live a meaningful life without punctuation of life. Punctuation of life refers to problem, obstacle, obstruction, hindrance or anything or person that tend to interrupt our progress.

Lessons from Analogy of Punctuation

When we see life as a literary work and problems as punctuation marks, we will realise that there are several great lessons we can imbibe to live a victorious life. Some lessons we can learn from the analogy of punctuation are:

1. No Condition is Permanent

The function of any punctuation mark is to interrupt MOMENTARILY. No punctuation mark puts an end to any literary work. It is the author that determines the end of his literary work. And when he determines to end his literary work, he uses such punctuation marks as full stop, exclamation mark or ellipses to do so. Out of all the punctuation marks, full stop is used mostly to end a sentence, but it does not necessarily put an end to a literary work.

In the same vein, problems (punctuation of life) are not permanent. Problems are not meant to put an end to your life. No problem can put an end to your activities, projects and life unless you permit it. It is YOU that determines when to finalise your activities and projects, and what punctuation mark you can use to put them to an end.

Problems are temporary. They have a lifespan. Some problems last longer than others just as full stop last longer than other punctuation marks, but they are not permanent. Just as full stop is not necessarily the end, no problem, no matter how long it exists, can remain permanent. This is why you must never conclude that it is all over.

2. Problems are Meant to Make, Not to Mar Us

Like punctuation marks, problems are permitted to exist so as to make and not to mar our life. We are defeated in life not because of myriads of problems confronting us, but because we allow problems to overwhelm us. Prolific writer and publisher of Our Daily Manna, a power-packed daily devotional publication, Rev. Dr. Chris Kwakpovwe, wrote: “THE SAME CIRCUMSTANCE THAT CAUSES SOME TO BREAK DOWN CAUSES OTHERS TO BREAK RECORDS.”

In the same vein, renowned authority in the psychology of change, Anthony Robbins, also observed: “SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE FEWER PROBLEMS THAN UNSUCCESSFUL PEOPLE.” The point is: NO PROBLEM CAN BREAK YOU DOWN UNLESS YOU PERMIT IT. Whether problems will cause you to break down or break records depends on how you react to them. Just as you can use punctuation marks to make your writing classic or mar your writing, you can equally use problems to make or mar your life.

Make up your mind today that you will never permit any problem to break you down. Let problem become a hammer you will use to break records. Learn to handle problems positively and you will never break down in life.

Until I come your way soon, go and live victoriously!

Four Strategies for Overcoming Battles of Life

It is easier to make decisions than to act upon those decisions. But if we are going to live a victorious life, we should not only make decisions, we should also boldly act upon those decisions we have made. The story is told of an army General who took his troop out to invade an island. When they reached the island, his troop became afraid. Their reason for being frightened was obvious: they were fighting against a formidable troop and the troop troop also outnumbered them.

When the General realized that they were overwhelmed by fear of the enemy, he commanded them to burn the ship. After the ship was burnt, he told them pointblank that since the ship had been burnt, there was no means of escape for them, and that if they were going to leave the island, they would have to do so in their enemy’s ship. Realizing that they had no choice than to confront their enemy and fight to the last drop of their blood, they resolved to attack their enemy. They fought and won. And worthy of note is that none of them was killed in the battle.

Dear reader, if you are going to live a victorious life all your life, you need to realize that life is war that must be fought and won. But how do you fight and win life’s battles? Below are four steps you can take to be victorious in every battle you are fighting.

1. Plan Your Strategy

Like real battles, success, prosperity and victory are functions of strategy. You need to understand that your victory is rooted in the strategy you adopt in the battle. No army goes to the battleground without a plan. The greatest mistake an army can make is to march to the war front without a strategy, or a concrete plan of how to defeat their enemy. The importance of planning cannot be overemphasized. It has been said that “A poor plan is better than not having a plan at all.” NEVER EMBARK ON ANY PROJECT WITHOUT A PLAN. Planning requires thinking and strategizing.

You need to sit down and think of how you are going to go about achieving your goal. You need to have a written plan that will contain the strategy you will use to reach your goal. When you think, you will be able to come up with a concrete strategy you will use to achieve your goal.

2. Burn Your Ship

Fear has a way of making us think of escape route in times of battle. But if we must be victorious in life, we should stop thinking of means of escape. We should stop making and looking for excuses to quit. I like what the Army General did. He ordered them to burn the ship. UNTIL THEY BURNED THE SHIP, THEY WERE NOT YET READY TO FIGHT. All they kept thinking about was the ship. They were ready to jump into the ship at the sight of the large number of formidable soldiers before them.

Dear reader, what is keeping you from making progress is that you have not burnt your ship yet. Your ship is that excuse you are holding tight to. Your ship is the means of escape you are contemplating. Any step you want to take so that you will not pursue your goal is the ship. And UNTIL YOU BURN THIS SHIP, YOU ARE NOT YET PREPARED FOR VICTORY. You have to burn your ship before you can actually brace yourself up for the battle.

3. Be Courageous

The purpose of burning the ship is to put you in the mood to fight. It is not the enemy that defeats us; it is fear that makes us to lose the victory that should be ours. In life’s battle, nobody is immune against fear. When we are about to start something worthwhile, we all have this fear that tends to make us discouraged and start looking for excuses we can give so that we don’t do what we want to do. Those excuses we give are products of fear. But if we must be victorious in life’s battles, we must put ourselves on the line.

When you burn your ship, you should not turn back any more. All you need do is advance. NOTHING SHOULD STOP YOU FROM MAKING PROGRESS IN LIFE. VICTORY IS NOT DETERMINED BY THE SIZE OR STRENGTH OF THE OPPOSITION OR BY THE PRESENCE OR ABSENCE OF DANGER. THE DETERMINING FACTOR FOR YOUR VICTORY IS COURAGE IN THE FACE OF DANGER.

In the midst of seeming danger, the easiest thing to do is to take to your heels, but if you are going to live a victorious life, you have to summon up the courage to face any seeming danger on your way. Learn to take risk whenever you want to embark on a worthwhile project. NOTHING VENTURED, NOTHING GAINED. The distinguishing factor between a champion and a loser is courage in the face of danger. As Sidney Bremer said, “LIFE IS NOT SO MUCH AS YOU THINK, BUT THE COURAGE YOU BRING INTO IT.”

4. Fight to Win

In life’s battles, you are expected not only to fight, but to fight and win. If you already have a strategic plan; if you have burnt your ship; if you have summoned up the courage to face the danger, then what follows is the battle. Now that you have put everything in place and now that there is no turning back, the tonic you need to energise you for victory is DETERMINATION.

It takes determination to execute every great plan you have made. It is said that “A poor plan well executed is better than a good plan poorly executed.” You should not only execute your plan, you should execute it properly. GOOD PLAN + GOOD EXECUTION=GREAT VICTORY.

Resolve today to fight and win and certainly, you will come out victorious at the end of the day!
