Winning Combination for Outstanding Success

I was in the law office of a senior colleague recently and had the opportunity of watching one of the programmes of Emmanuel Television, a DSTV platform.
In the programme, it appeared to me that Prophet T.B. Joshua’s Synagogue Church of All Nations was celebrating some of their members who performed excellently in their respective fields. Among these members were two young prodigies whose performance were outstanding and worthy of emulation.
One of them is a twenty-three year-old female graduate of University of Lagos who bagged first-class degree in electrical and electronics engineering. The other prodigy is a member of Nigeria’s under-17 National soccer team who was decorated for his excellent performance in the under-17 World Cup. Yes, I still remember the footballer’s name. he is Isah Emmanuel.
The church was very proud of their achievement. I remember Prophet T.B. Joshua expressed joy at the members’ performance and encouraged other members to strive for excellence.
One of the remarkable moments in the occasion was when the twenty-three year-old female first-class graduate was given the microphone to bare her mind to the entire congregation. In her speech, she disclosed the secret of her outstanding academic performance. According to her, it was Prophet T.B. Joshua who encouraged her to excel. The prophet encouraged her to “work as if all depended on her and to pray as if all depended on God.”

This child prodigy held tenaciously to the words of her prophet. She studied as if all depended on her and prayed as if all depended on God. In the end, she came out with first-class result!
What a great inspiration to all of us! Success is a function of principles. When God created the world, he laid down principles for us to apply in order to achieve great success in life. Sometimes, we will need to apply only one of these principles; while at most other times, we will have to combine two or more of these principles before we can achieve outstanding success.
If our goal is to achieve outstanding success, then, we must combine certain principles. And these principles, when narrowed down to two, will find expression in the word of encouragement given to the first-class female graduate by her prophet which are:
1.   Work as if everything depends on you; and
2.   Pray as if everything depends on God.
These two principles above really bring to light why some people achieve outstanding success while others don’t. The mistake we make most times is that we try to substitute one of these principles for the other, instead of combining the duo. It is either we are working hard or we are praying hard. We fail to realize that it is the combination of work and prayer that bring outstanding results.
The Place of Work
Nature demands that we should work in order to succeed. To achieve outstanding success without working for it, is mere wishful thinking. It is like the omelet. You cannot make an omelet without breaking the egg. You can’t achieve worthwhile success without putting in great effort.
A student who will not read and study what he is being taught and he is expecting to bag first-class degree or distinction is like a man who wants to reap where did not sow. A student who wants to earn distinction must be ready to work for it.
If you belong to the category of people who think or believe that you don’t have to labour to get what you want, I urge you to change your orientation quickly. There is no such thing as something for nothing. You should establish it in your mind that if you want anything in life, you must work for it.
Don’t be a joker in the pack. Virtually all successful people worked hard to get to where they are today. Most, if not all of them, worked harder than others to be ahead of the rest.
The Place of Prayer
However, hard work is not the ultimate. It is possible to work as hard as the super successful people do or even harder and yet not make any headway. It is possible to be as brilliant and hardworking as the top scorers in the class and yet not make a distinction.
You see, as far as success is concerned, hard work alone is not enough to guarantee outstanding success. You need a complement or a combination to guarantee your success. This is where prayer comes in.
If you are doing everything humanly possible to achieve great success in life, and success look like a mirage, then, it means you need to apply a winning combination that will guarantee outstanding success. This combination is “work” and “prayer.”

You should not only work, you should also pray fervently. Prayer is the key. Prayer is the master key that unlocks every door of success. However, the mistake many of us make is that we see prayer as the only thing we should do in order to succeed.
Prayer alone is not enough. Just as God commands us to pray, He also commands us to work. Neither work nor prayer is indispensable. Both are essential for the accomplishment of great goals.
On Work
On work as a principle for success, the Book of Success, the Bible says:
a.   “Be ye strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak: for your work shall be rewarded” (2 Chron. 15:7);
b.   “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might” (Eccl. 9:10);
c.   “He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough” (Prov. 28:19); and
d.   “He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich” (Prov. 10:4).
On Prayer
On prayer as a principle for success, the Bible says:
a.   “And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint” (Luke 18:1);
b.   “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:17);
c.   “Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them” (Mark 11:24); and
d.   “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it” (John 14:13-14).
In the light of the above Bible passages, Propher T.B. Joshua’s utterance that one should “work as if all depends on one and pray as if all depends on God” is the ultimate winning combination for outstanding success.
These are the same success principles that is being preached here at CFVL (Centre for Victorious Living). Work alone may not take you far. So also is prayer. Prayer alone is not enough. If you are praying when you should work, your prayer will never take the place of work and so may not avail you. If you are working, working and working when you should be praying, praying and praying, the work will never avail you.
“Work” is tantamount to doing the best you can while “prayer” is asking God to crown your effort with success. Now, the principles of “work” and “prayer” are intertwined. You cannot separate one from the other. They go hand-in-hand.
Dear reader, are you looking for the ultimate combination for achieving the incredible? Then, look no further! This combination havs been delivered to you in this article. “WORK AS IF ALL DEPENDS ON YOU; PRAY AS IF ALL DEPENDS ON GOD.”
Like the female first-class graduate, when you work as if all depends on you and you pray as if all depends on God, every obstacle will be turned to steppingstone, every limitation will become an opportunity and every closed door will lead to discoveries of many open-doors!

I urge you to apply this God-approved powerful combination today and you will achieve outstanding success in every area of your pursuit. Till I come your way soon, go and live victoriously!

It pays to Fight on Doggedly!

Prior to the US presidential election recently concluded, everything looked as if the battle has been fought and won. It was as though Donald Trump will lose; it was as though Hilary Clinton would win. As they move from one part of the US to another campaigning and soliciting the votes of the electorates, people’s response pointed to Hillary Clinton as the 1st female and 45th US president. Clinton was even leading until the final day of the election.

You may not be wrong if you thought that Trump would lose. By his orientation and from his utterances, his hatred for the Blacks, Latin Americans, Arabs, etc is obvious. His utterances depits him as a racist. And racism is what Americans seem to condemn. At a point, some of his own party members who did not share his view distanced themselves from him.

To many Americans, Trump’s defeat was inevitable and Clinton’s victory is certain. Even Clinton’s supporters who gathered together to celebrate her victory were sure she would win the election. It was only at the dying moment when they realized that Trump would triumph that they “evaporated.”

Some of Clinton’s supporters wept bitterly when it was announced that Trump had won. This goes to show the credibility of Clinton’s candidacy, the people’s loyalty and wish. But alas! Their wish was not to be.

Trump on the other hand was not so sure he would win the election, but he was determined to fight on doggedly. From Trump’s utterances, you would think getting to the White House was a mirage for him. Trump has always been like that. He is not a pretender. He always expresses himself they way he feels without caring whose ox is gored.

To all intents and purposes, Trump’s speech was enough to deny him access to the White House, yet he got there!

There are some lessons to learn from Trump’s victory. Let’s discuss them briefly:

1.   If God Ordains that You Will Get to a Position, Nothing Will Change it

This point summarises the victory of Trump in the recently concluded US presidential election. You may call it “destiny,” “fate” or “predestination.” They are happening all around us, but it’s just that we are not adverting our mind to the happenings. Obama’s first and second victory present vivid illustration of the fact that if God wills that you should get to a position, nothing can hold you back. Years ago, in Rivers State of Nigeria, a man did not contest election yet he became Governor of Rivers State! If you knew how desperate aspirants were, if you realise the struggles, the sacrifices and the efforts aspirants made trying to become governor of their state, you will realise that becoming a governor without contesting in an election is a miracle!

The lesson is clear: IF GOD ORDAINS THAT YOU WILL GET TO A POSITION, NOTHING CAN CHANGE IT.

2.   Your Past Doesn’t Matter

The second lesson here is that as far as your future or destiny is concerned, your past doesn’t matter. Both Trump and Clinton had their weaknesses. There were allegations of Clinton’s dishonesty traced to her emails (though not proved). Trump on the other hand was prosecuted under the Federal Law of America for his act of discriminating against nonwhites in refusing to let his properties to them.

Despite their weak points, they won their party’s primaries and became candidates for the US election. Talk about the past, every person has a dirty past. But our past does not determine our future. I think one reason our past doesn’t matter is that nobody is perfect. We all have our weak points. If God were to consider our past and use it as a criteria, nobody would merit any good thing in life.

The lesson here is: DO NOT LET YOUR PAST DETERMINE YOUR FUTURE. LEARN TO FORGIVE AND FORGET. GOD IS NOT CONSIDERING YOUR PAST. IF HE WERE, YOU WON’T BE WHERE YOU ARE TODAY

3.   Take the Risk

Someone once said: “THE GREATEST RISK IS NOT TAKING A RISK.” Imagine what would happen if Trump had quit during the early stage of the election when it appeared the odds were against him, when Clinton was leading. Of course, he wouldn’t have become the 45th president of the US. For Trump who is more of a business man than a politician, contesting the presidential election is a risky one – he may not win. Yet, he took the risk.

Clinton, a senator and politician to the core, also had her own risk to take. If she won the election, she would become the 1st female American president. If she doesn’t, her party, The Democrat, would relinquish power to Turmp’s Republican.

Losing is not the greatest risk. Unfortunately, this is what we are always afraid of. We are always thinking: “What if I lose?” “What if I don’t win?” The fear of failure is what is holding us down in defeat. NOT TAKING A RISK IS THE GREATEST RISK. Our thinking should be: “What if I win?” “What if I succeed?” You have little or nothing to lose if you fail, but you have everything to gain if you win. This is the thought pattern of supersuccessful people: they don’t think about failure; they think about success.

The lesson here is: DON’T LET FEAR OF FAILURE HOLD YOU BACK FROM TRYING. YOU MAY FAIL, BUT THERE IS NO HARM IN TRIAL. IT IS FAILURE TO MAKE AN ATTEMPT AT SUCCESS THAT IS THE GREATEST RISK

4.   It Pays to Fight on

You don’t win, if you quit. But you have every chance of winning if you keep doing the best you can. Both Trump and Clinton were dogged fighters. They had equal chances of winning.  They fought gallantly. That is the spirit! Trump particularly fought on doggedly even when it appeared he was going to lose to Clinton. Clinton also kept herself on track in her attempt to become the 1st female American president.

What is it you are aspiring to be or achieve? Are you willing to put in the best you can? Or will you give up when it appears you are going to lose? Sticking to the fight when the fight gets toughest is what will earn you the victory you desire.

Get up and keep fighting now. And like Trump, as you fight on doggedly, you will eventually realise that it pays to fight on and never to give up!

Until I come your way soon, go and live victoriously!

Jessica Cox: 4 Lessons from a Champion in the Game of Life

In the game of life, we have three categories of people. We have the champions, the losers, and the spectators. Champions are those who overcome and achieve outstanding success. Losers are not necessarily those who fail or are defeated, or those who encounter setbacks. Even champions at one point in time or the other do fail, suffer defeat, or encounter setbacks. What distinguishes a champion from a loser is that while a champion never quits whenever he loses, a loser quits as soon as he loses or encounters setbacks. Losers are, therefore, those who quit, and because they quit, they have no record of great achievement.

Spectators, on the other hand, are those who neither belong to the category of champions nor to the losers. They are simply watchers. They are there to watch the champions and the losers. When a person wins, they chant:”Hosanna! Hosanna!” and when a person quits, they chant: “crucify him! Crucify him! That is the spectators’ stock-in-trade.

The category you belong to determines your status in life. Yes, everybody wants to be a champion and the truth is, everybody can become a champion, provided everyone is willing to do what they champion do to win in the game of life.

Recently, in the course of my research into the lives of champions, I had cause to draw inspiration from the story of Jessica Cox, the first pilot without arms. What she uses to fly plane is her legs.

Jessica was born without arms. It was a “rare congenital disease”, though before her birth, her mother did series of tests which showed that there was nothing wrong with her.

In the midst of this disability, Jessica refused to yield to frustration and discouragement. She refused to become a spectator in the game of life; she also refused to quit.
And because she refused to quit, she recorded remarkable achievements, which many able-bodied men cannot achieve.
Below is a record of her exploit:

  • She writes with her feet
  •  She types 25 words per minute
  •  She drives her car with her feet
  •  She brushes her hair with her feet
  •  She talks on her phone using her feet
  •  She was a former dancer
  •  She has a double black belt in Tai Kwon-Do
  •  She has a no-restrictions driving licence
  •  She is a psychology graduate
  •  She is the first pilot with no arms
  •  Many more.

Here are two comments made about Jessica on the Interne:

“Wow what a warrior. She is amazing!”

“I thought we men we’re the ones with balls. She puts us to shame. Good on u girl.”

What lessons can we learn from this champion in the game of life? Below are four lessons every person wishing to be a champion in the game of life must imbibe:

1. Conquer the Wars Within

To be a champion in the game of life, you must first conquer the wars within. The wars within are your feeling of helplessness, self-pity, despair, fear, feeling of inferiority, etc.Jessica was faced with all these and more, yet she refused to surrender. Giving up is the easiest thing to do. This is the lot of losers, not champions.

You need to work on yourself. Cultivate the ability to handle your negative emotions. This is what emotional intelligence is all about. Stop complaining, stop pitying yourself, and stop giving excuses. Start looking inward to discover your potentialities and talents. These are what you should focus on. These are what you need to triumph in the game of life.

2. Have a Sense of Pride

People who have sense of pride will never do anything that would lower their self-esteem. I have seen able-bodied individual (persons who have arms and legs) ask for alms on the streets and motor parks. I have also seen youths who have taken to crimes. It is not the circumstances that make them to opt for criminal activities. They choose to become what they are, as an easy way out of their predicament.

Anthony Robbins, the great motivational speaker and writer, said: “Successful people don't have fewer problems than unsuccessful people.”

As a matter of fact, successful people have more problems to contend with than the unsuccessful ones. The bigger the problems or challenges, the bigger the success ahead. But it is your ability to overcome these problems or challenges that makes you a champion. Don’t surrender to problems or challenges, confront them. Draw upon your God-given abilities, potentialities, and talents. Have a sense of pride. Run away from anyting that will make you to live a wretched, hopeless, and inglorious life.

Strive for noble deeds. Refuse to be a mediocre. Set great goals for yourself and strive to achieve them. When you have sense of pride, you will not do things that will lower your self-esteem.

3. Empower Yourself

In the game of life, you cannot win laurels unless you are well-prepared for the tournament. Jessica became a champion in the game of life because she was fully prepared and contested in the game. The starting point to becoming a champion in the game of life is empowerment. The more you empower yourself, the greater your chances of success. You can empower yourself by going to school to bag a degree in the course of your choice. If you already possess a bachelor’s degree, go for your Masters; if you are a Master’s degree holder, go for your PHD.

You can also empower yourself by going for skill acquisition training. In this ICT age, you cannot afford not to be computer literate. There are many institutes all over the placer running ICT courses. Consider computer engineering, software engineering, graphic design, web design and development. There are many other skills you can learn, depending on your area of interest, and how lucrative such skills are in your locality. So, when choosing skill to learn, consider what you are passionate about and how lucrative the skill is in your locality.

4. No Limitations except the Ones You Set for Yourself

Every loser in the game of life has one excuse or the other to give for his failure in life. A champion does not give excuse for any failure or setback he suffers, because he does not believe anything can hinder him from winning in the game.

Jessica has proved that there are no limitations in the game of life. The only limitations are the ones you set for yourself. No wonder, Epictetus said: “Men are disturbed not by things but by the view they take of things.”

If there are limitations on your way to success, it is because of your perspective about those things that you call "limitations." In practical terms, there are no limitations in the game of life. If you are limited, it is because you allow yourself to be limited by the thing you call limitation. There is ability in disability! Jessica has proved it! The ability in you is a thousand times greater than any disability or any “limitations.”

What are those things you think are disabilities or limitations restricting you from winning in the game of life? Take a pen and a sheet of paper and write them down. Then, speak to the paper as follows: ‘From today, you are no longer limitations to my success in life. There are no such things as “limitations.” My God-given ability is a thousand times greater than you.’

After this, you tear the paper to pieces or burn it. Whenever the thought or feeling of these “limitations” comes, just ignore and refuse to believe them.

And finally, keep focusing on the thousands of things you can do and ignore the rest. Believe in your abilities and use them to the maximum.

As you do these, it is my hope that, like Jessica, you will also do something great that will astound your generation. And until I come your way soon, go and live victoriously!

Dig Deeper

Whether it is gold you are looking for or diamond or water, it is important to note that they are not laid bare for you to find. If they were laid bare, everybody would be rich. The difference between the rich and the poor, therefore, lies in the ability to dig deeper and discover what one is looking for. Our success in life is anchored on our ability to dig deeper and deeper until we find what we are looking for.

What this implies is that to achieve anything worthwhile, we must endeavour to strive and keep striving until we achieve it. We should never be tired or discouraged, we must keep digging deeper and deeper until we discover our goldmine.

An incident happened some time ago in a locality in Nigeria which vividly explains the need to persevere and never to give up until we achieve whatever we want to achieve. The incident is about a man who hired a workman to sink a borehole for him. After the contract was sealed and the workman was paid part of the payment, the workman took two boys along with him and they started digging.

They dug and dug and dug, bringing out mountains of sands of different colours – red, grey, brown, light brown, milk colour, white and even stones. They kept digging deeper and deeper. At a stage, they came across a pool of water which, according to them, was not the real water. They drew out the water and kept digging, yet there was no sign of water.

Discouraged, the workman informed his paymaster: “Oga, the way we normally do this our work is that if we keep digging and we still cannot find water, we will stop there and abandoned the borehole.”

Displeased by the workman’s lame excuse, the paymaster warned him that he would not take it lightly with him if he abandoned the job without completing it.

The workman had no choice than to take the two other boys with him to the borehole site to resume digging the borehole. Surprisingly, after digging for a few hours, they found water!

There are great lessons to learn here. Let us discuss just two great lessons we can learn from the above story. The two lessons are:

1. You Are Closer to Success than You Think

The fact is, we fail many a time not because we lack the ability to succeed, but because we quit too soon. You are not a loser because you lost. You have not lost because you were defeated. You become a loser only when you quit. They only moment you become a loser is when you quit.

“QUITTERS NEVER WIN AND WINNERS NEVER QUIT,” says Napoleon Hill, author of the bestselling motivational book, THINK AND GROW RICH. What will guarantee your success in life is your willingness to persevere until you win.

If you are doing the best you can and it appears you are not making any headway, never be discouraged. Keep digging. Just when you are contemplating quitting, that is when you should hold on and never give up. This is because you are closer to success than you think.

In the above story, the borehole diggers, after digging and digging and digging and did not find water, became discouraged. They started making plan to abandon the borehole and quit. Little did they know that they were at the verge of finding the water. If they knew they were closer to the water, they would not think of quitting.

Many a time, we come very close to success, but because of discouragement, tiredness and frustration, we quit! Nearer so close, but victory so far, just because we quit!

The lesson we can learn from the borehole digger is that IT IS ALWAYS TOO SOON TO QUIT. We get discouraged most times when we don’t succeed at the time we badly want success. Another reason we get discouraged is that we always expect to succeed at the shortest possible time. And when success doesn’t happen as soon as we expect, we lose hope and quit.

The fact is, that some time we succeed soon or sooner than we expect, and some other time, it may take longer time before we succeed. Pastor Robert H. Schuller, who started his church, Crystal Cathedral, with his wife, children and with the sum of $500, and grew it to a large church, said: “SUCCESS IS NEVER ENDING; FAILURE IS NEVER FINAL.”

Success may or may not come when you expect it. You don’t have to bother yourself over “how” and “when” success will welcome. Success won’t always come to you; you have to work your way to meet it. Of course, you should expect to succeed at the shortest possible time, but if you fail to succeed at the shortest possible time, don’t be discouraged, and don’t quit.

You may be tempted to say: “I’ve been doing the best I can and yet success seems to be a mirage. If I try it this time and I don’t succeed, I will never try again.” There may come a time when you will feel like abandoning your project, business, education, job or contract. But you know what? Anytime we start contemplating quitting, we should realise that discouragement is setting in.

And the reason you must not be discouraged is that you are closer to success than you think. It might be that one more effort that you put in may earn you the success you are craving for.

2. It is Unusual for a Successful Man to Quit

The second lesson to learn is that successful people never quit. To a successful person, quitting is unusual, it is unheard of. A successful man does not quit no matter the weight of the odds that are piled up against him. At the worst moment of defeat, he looking for victory.

The distinguishing factor between a successful man and the unsuccessful man is PERSEVERANCE. It is your ability to endure the blows of failure, defeat and frustration that life deals at you, and your ability to persevere until life hands over to you what you demand of it, that will make you a successful man.

But if you can no longer endure the blows that life is dealing at you, then, you are at the verge of quitting. You will always find unsuccessful people who quit, but you can never find a successful man who quits. Quitting is not associated with successful people; it is associated with unsuccessful people.

The question life is asking you is: “Will you quit or will you keep digging deeper and deeper until you find the treasure you are looking for?”

QUITTING IS NOT THE SOLUTION; IT IS PERSEVERANCE THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE!

Do you want to be super successful? Then, never, never quit. Remember, LIFE WILL NOT GIVE YOU WHAT YOU WANT UNTIL YOU PAY FOR IT. Life is neither a generous donor nor a Father Christmas. The price you will pay to force life to hand over to you what you want is to dig deeper and deeper. It takes perseverance to do so.

With perseverance, success is certain. But without perseverance, it is impossible to succeed. Make up your mind today that you will never quit but will continue to dig deeper and deeper and deeper until you eventually find your treasure.

Finally, remember dear reader, that it is always too early to quit. You are closer to success than you think. You are at the threshold of success. You have gone a long way. The distance between you and success is far shorter than the distance you have traversed in your journey to success.

Just one more effort could make the difference! Get back to work and roll up your sleeves again. Dig deeper and deeper one more time and you will surely find the treasure you are looking for.

Until I come your way soon, go and live victoriously!
