How Many “Nos” Can You Take?

The issue every one of us must address is not so much as what we want to become, but the extent to which we can go before realising our goals. From the studies I carried out personally, I realised that most super successful people have one thing in common: they don’t take “no” for an answer.

 

Lincoln’s record of many failures before he became president of America buttresses this fact.

It is on record that Lincoln:

“Failed in business at age 31;

Was defeated in a legislative race at age 32;

Failed again in business at age 34;

Lost his wife in 1835 at age 35;

Had a nervous breakdown at age 36;

Lost an election at age 38;

Lost a congressional race at age 43;

Lost a congressional race at age 46;

Lost a congressional race at age 48;

Lost a senatorial race at age 50;

Failed in an effort to become vice president at age 52; but

Was finally elected president of the United States at age 60.

Your success in life is hinged on the number of “nos” you can take. IT IS YOUR ABILITY TO HANDLE THE PAINS, THE SADNESS, AND THE SORROW BROUGHT ABOUT BY THE WORD “NO” THAT WILL DISTINGUISH YOU AND MAKE YOU STAND OUT OF THE CROWD.

If Lincoln had said, “I have had enough, I can’t take it anymore,” and quit, he would not have become president of his country. It is said that life will give to you what you ask of it, but until you convince life that you are worthy of it, life will not give to you what you ask of it.

 

One great gulf that stands between losers and winners is ATTITUDE. Losers tend to interpret failure as a personality. Therefore, the thought of being considered a failure would not make them to try embarking on any new project.

I don’t blame them, because once in a while we all take failure as a terrible experience. But this should not be so, because you are not a failure simply because you failed.

Failure, like success, is an event. As Elizabeth Kubler Ross said, “THERE ARE NO MISTAKES, NO COINCIDENCES. ALL EVENTS ARE BLESSINGS GIVEN TO US TO LEARN.”

Failure should be seen as a pill, not a poison. The moment you start seeing failure as a pill, and not a poison, your progress in life has begun. Failures are pills meant to cure our fears. THE MORE FAILURES YOU ARE WILLING TO EXPERIENCE, THE QUICKER WILL BE YOUR RATE OF SUCCESS.

Brian Tracy once wrote about one Arthur Gordon who approached Thomas Watson Sr., founder of IBM. Gordon asked Watson how he could succeed faster as a writer.

Watson replied: “IF YOU WANT TO BE A SUCCESSFUL WRITER, YOU MUST DOUBLE YOUR RATE OF FAILURE.”

One person that lived the reality of this word of wisdom is Thomas Edison. When Edison set out to invent the electric bulb many years ago, he made up his mind to take all the “nos” that must be taken before arriving at the discovery.

It is on record that Edison took more than 10,000 “nos” before he found a way of making the bulb to work.

At the 9,999^th time, someone asked him if he wanted to fail the 10, 000^th time. Edison said he had not failed, but had discovered 9,999 ways that the bulb would not work.

Dear reader, life will give you what you demand of it. If you ask for a Kobo, life will give you a kobo; if you ask for a naira, life will give you a naira. But what life requires of you is the ability to take many nos on your way to getting what you ask of. So, the things that are standing between you and what you want to get are the nos. These nos could be setbacks, disappointments, failures, defeat, discouragement, frustrations, etc.

SOMETIMES, THEY COME IN BATTALION, BUT IT IS YOUR ABILITY TO HANDLE THEM THAT DETERMINES HOW FAR YOU CAN GO IN LIFE.

Elizabeth Kubler Ross said, “THERE ARE NO MISTAKES, NO COINCIDENCES. ALL EVENTS ARE BLESSINGS GIVEN TO US TO LEARN.” Your nos or whichever names you want to call them – failure, disappointment, rejection, etc, are all events and they are not meant to harm us but to bless us. However, if you see them as harmful and you refuse to focus on the blessings therein, that is when they tend to weigh you down.

Secret Strategy of Super Achievers

INTERNET RICHES: THE SIMPLE MONEY-MAKING SECRETS OF ONLINE MILLIONAIRES, the secret of achieving incredible success is to dream bigger than you possibly can. I think this is a great message we must imbibe if we must achieve our new year resolutions.

In his other bestselling book, MENTORED BY A MILLIONAIRE: MASTER STRATEGIES OF SUPER ACHIEVERS, while explaining this principle of dreaming bigger than you can possibly achieve, Scott condemned the goal-setting strategy propagated by motivational speakers, writers and educators who teach that we should only set reasonable and achievable goals.

According to Scott, setting only reasonable and timely achievable goals is “one of the greatest falsehoods ever propagated by motivational speakers, writers and educators.” To prove his assertion, he cited the case of Thomas Edison who set his goal of inventing the lightbulb in an impossible time period of three years, and did it in less than three years!

What is worthy of note is that scientists who were far more intelligent than Edison had spent more than 50 years trying to invent the same electric bulb and failed.

Going by this precedent, a more reasonable goal that Edison could have set for himself was 50 years or more, but Edison set an unreasonable goal of inventing the bulb in three years!

Another real fact Scott gave to prove his point is the success story of America’s great auto maker, Henry Ford. Before Ford started his auto company, there were other 250 American auto makers who were turning out 12 to 300 cars per year. Now, if this precedent is anything to go by, a more reasonable goal Ford could have set was to produce between 13 and 299 cars per year, but Ford set an impossible goal of putting a car in every garage in America. Surprisingly, within a few years, he was building 1,000 cars, not per year but per day!

Dear friend, what a revelation! – this principle of dreaming bigger than you can possibly achieve! 1.   Don’t Be Afraid to Set High Goals for Yourself

One of the reasons we don’t set high goals for ourselves is that we are afraid that we will not achieve them. It is this fear that is holding us back from being the best that God wants us to be. 2.   Be Prepared to Fail Many Times

Philip D’ Armour once told his team of engineers that unless they are prepared to fail woefully, they would never achieve outstanding success.

Failure is really the highway to success, but unfortunately we don’t want to pass through this way. The electric bulb we are enjoying today would not have come into existence without the thousands of failures recorded by its inventor, Edison. 

It is on record that Edison failed 10,000 times before he finally invented the incandescent bulb.  When asked whether he wanted to fail the 10,000^th times before inventing the bulb, he replied: “I’ve not failed; I have only discovered 10,000 ways that the bulb would not work.”

A young aspiring writer once asked great entrepreneur, Sam Walton what he must do to become a successful writer, Walton replied: “If you want to be a successful writer, double your rate of failure.”
