Welcome to another
moment of inspiration and motivation. If you have been in a situation where you
feel you will never rise to stardom, where it appears a cloud of hopelessness
has beclouded your view so much so that you cannot see a great future, and you
conclude that there can never be a great future for you, then, spare me just 7

Deng Thiak Adut was
born into the Denka tribe, the largest ethnic group in South Sudan. He grew up
in the remotest sub-Saharan region of Sudan with no clothes, no education and
no contact with Western culture.
At the age of 6, Adut
was taken away from his mother and conscripted into the Sudan People’s
Liberation Army (SPLA). He was trained to use the AK 47 rifle. For 9 years, he
fought in the war that eventually split his country, Sudan, into two, maiming
killing and destroying lives and properties.
With the help of his
elder half-brother, John Mac Akuek who was 12 years older than him, he was moved from
Sudan to Kenya where they spent 18 months in a mud hut in a blistering hot
refugee camp, before their visa for Australia was approved in 1998. This is
made possible with the sponsorship of Christian Aid workers, Bob and Christine
Harrison.
Education
At Sydney, Australia,
the illiterate, penniless Adut taught himself English while engaged in several part
time jobs to earn a living. He later enrolled in an intensive English course at
Blacktown TAFC and frequented libraries. He often slept in his car so that he
didn’t come late to class. Eventually, he was accepted to study law in two
universities, but he chose Western Sydney University (WSU) where he later
bagged his LL.B. degree.
The dean of the school
of Law, WSU, remarked: “He is a remarkably good lawyer.”
Legal Practice
In 2001, he
nationalised as an Australian citizen. Presently, he is fully into legal
practice and had acquired a level of local fame as “a defender of the
dispossessed on the multicultural streets of Blacktown, Australia.”
Adut, who is described
as a dedicated and energetic community leader, co-founded a law firm known as
AC Law with Correy, his colleague in the legal practice. Correy, his partner in
their law firm, remarked that Adut is “an alpha male personality and in court,
he’s a fighter who never takes a backward step.”
Motivation
A respected lawyer and
an advocate of the refugees in Australia, Adut is a testimony to the
transformative power of education. Bob Harrison, one of Adut’s sponsors, said
of him: “He was eager to learn and learned very quickly.”
The word of Adut’s
quiet and extraordinary achievements spread far and wide after his Almer mater
(WSU) posted a video telling his story. Within a week, 300,000 watched the
video. So far, several millions of people had watched his video.
In an interview with
702 ABC, Adut said: “I put the video up as a form of telling everyone that no
matter how many journeys, how many problems, how many obstacles you have on
your way, you have to acknowledge that your disadvantage is not entirely your
disadvantage. It could be your advantage if you followed a way with the right
ingredients or the right training or the right kind of people.”
Philanthropy
On philanthropy, Adut
said, “What I do for other people is what will make me happy.” Perhaps, this is
what motivated him to run John Mac Foundation, a charity established in memory
of late John Mac Akuek, his elder half-brother, who moved him from Sudan to Kenya
and thereafter to Australia.
