Anywhere the history
of gospel music in Nigeria is told, one name that cannot be forgotten is Panam
Percy Paul.
The Adamawa
State-born gospel artiste started singing from childhood. His father taught him
to play musical instruments. Later, he started playing in clubs.
However, when he
became born again, everything about him changed. His song writing also changed.
In an interview with
Confluence FM radio, lokoja, Kogi State, Nigeria on June 30, 2013, the
engineer-turned gospel artiste, declared: “I have been singing gospel for over
40 years.”
Indeed, 40 years in a
career is not a joke. Panam has not only stamped his feet indelibly on the
sands of time with his gospel music, he is also a big inspiration to up and
coming gospel music super stars.
At Jos, Plateau State
capital, where he runs his music studio company, he uses his experience and
studio facilities to wax high quality
albums for other gospel singers.
Turning Passion to Fame and Fortune
The secret of Panam’s
success in life is his strong passion, dedication and commitment to song
writing and production. Commenting on his strong passion for music, this former
soldier in the Nigerian Army and who left the army after a short spell, said:
“I have more passion for music and communication than other interests. My
father didn’t take it kindly with me after dumping my engineering. It got to a
point that he actually disowned me for 19 years.”
But a day came when
they reconciled. In Panam’s words: “I invited my father to my music launch.
When he saw the kind of dignitaries that attended the occasion, he was really
impressed. From then, we reconciled… One day, I came to him, knelt down and
asked him to lay his hands on me and bless me.”
Thus, his strong
passion for music, not only earned him fame and fortune, it also brought him
reconciliation with his hitherto impressed father.
Music and the Gospel
“I am raised up to communicate
the gospel,” the music icon asserted with passion. And the medium through which
he communicates the gospel is music.
He is of the opinion
that before you can communicate the gospel effectively via music, you must
first be trained as a minister. In his words: “Go and get trained first as a
minister. Thereafter, you can go into gospel music and you will be able to
communicate the gospel effectively.”
Inspiration
On how he got
inspiration to sing those great songs of
his, he replied: “Inspiration, they say, flies around. You can get inspiration from
spiritual encounter, challenges, from God and from Holy Spirit. To be able to
communicate the gospel, you must be inspired by the Holy Spirit.”
Handling Challenges
Problems are part of
life and no one is immune against them. Panam does not deny this fact, rather,
he proffers concrete solution to all problems of life. “Tears,” he said, “do
not solve problems. It is only the source of life that handles our problems.”
Last Words
“Last words” should
not be words that elicit sorrow or negative feelings; or words that put people
in apprehension and hopelessness. “Last words” should be words of hope,
inspiration, motivation and faith. And this is what the gospel is all about.
Panam’s concept of
“last words,” as can be deduced from his last statement in the interview with
Confluence FM radio, Lokoja, is one of hope, inspiration, motivation and faith.
His last words were: “I just want to encourage everyone of us that He has a
plan for us. To know it, we have to go back to God. He is the Source of Life. Stay
with God, stay with Jesus.”
