Welcome to this month of April. In this post, we are looking at how we can deploy the power of the present to achieve great success in life.
The power of the present lies in what we do today. It is so unfortunate that, more often than not, we fritter away time and opportunities due to our own frivolity and hedonistic lifestyle.
It is okay to relax, it is okay to rest.
Rest recuperates. Rest invigorates. But when rest stretches beyond the normal
to idleness, then, we are no longer resting but abusing the power of the
present.
If we are to be prosecuted in court for
time wasting, at the end of the trial, the weight of evidence against us will
be so overwhelming that the judge will not hesitate to convict us of
time wasting.
But wait a minute, since nothing is an
offence which is not coded in our law, no one will prosecute you for time
wasting. Neither is this article written to pass judgment on you for time
wasting.
However, because of the importance of
time, it is needful that we constantly remind ourselves of it, and be up and
doing. As it is often said, “Time waits for no one.”
The Past is Gone
“There is no power in the past or in the
future,” says successful power blogger, Steve Pavlina, “only in the present moment.”
We cannot rewind or bring back the past.
The past is gone. All our successes and failures have gone by. While we may recall
our past successes and failures, we cannot bring back the hand of the clock.
Since we cannot bring back the past, it
is pointless to keep focusing on the past. Our greatest regrets in life are not
the mistakes we have made in the past, but those opportunities that we fail to
take advantage of.
If we must achieve outstanding success
in life, we should stop dwelling in the past. Dwelling in the past has a way of
tripping us and causing us to fall by the way side. Focusing on the past can
either cause us to be complacent and frivolous or cause to us to regret over
our past failures.
The fact is, no matter how much we worry
about the past, the past has gone, we cannot retrieve it. It is therefore unwise
to keep fussing over it. Fussing over the past is as time wasting as doing
nothing to move us forward. “There is no power in the past; only in the
present moment.”
Paul’s Example
Saint Paul, a combatant in the Lord’s
army, advised any person who wishes to be a victor in the battles of life to
stop focusing on the past. In his words, “…forgetting those things which are
behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before. I press toward
the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” (Phil.
3:13-14)
If Paul’s past record is anything to go
by, we may conclude that he is beyond redemption. By his past record, he was a
murderer and a persecutor. But after his unforgettable encounter with Jesus
which led to his repentance, he realized that since God was no longer imputing
his sins to him, it was unwise of him to keep regretting over his past
failures.
Paul did not allow his past to drag him
back. The lesson here is: To be victorious in life, we must not only repent of
our sins, mistakes and failures, we must equally forgive ourselves and forget
the past.
Paul’s focus was on “reaching forth unto
those things which are before.” To this end, he utilized the power of the
present by continuously “pressing towards the mark of the high calling of God in
Christ Jesus.”
He was so conscious of the power of the
present that he once declared: “For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing
to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach
not the gospel!” (1Cor 9:16).
Your own calling may not be missionary
work, but whatever be your calling, to achieve outstanding success in life, you must forget your past achievements, failures and shortcomings, and start doing
something everyday, no matter how little, to keep moving forward.
Tomorrow is Powerless
Just as there is no power in the present,
there is no power in the future. Tomorrow is uncertain. Just as it it pointless
dwelling in the past, it is equally pointless dwelling in the future.
Jimmy Lyons said: “Tomorrow is the only
day in the year that appeals to a lazy man.”
People who dwell in the future rarely
make progress. This is because they always procrastinate. Procrastinating means
putting till tomorrow what you are supposed to do today. If we keep putting
till tomorrow what we are supposed to do today, we may end up never doing it.
Procrastination, they say, is a thief of time.
If you must fulfill your destiny, one of
the enemies you must deal with is procrastination. Note that the tomorrow we
talked about yesterday is today. So, today is what matters most.
The present Moment is the Ultimate
Pastor Femi Emmanuel, founder of Living
Spring Chapel International, said: “Yesterday is gone, tomorrow is uncertain,
what you really have is TODAY and if you wisely spend today, the fear of tomorrow’s
uncertainty would have been well taken care of.”
Unlike yesterday and tomorrow, today is
powerful. The power of today lies in what we do today. You are alive today
because God is giving you the time and opportunities to fulfill your destiny.
Today is what you really have. Whether you will make it in life or not, depends
on what you do today.
HENRY LONGFELLOW SAID: “THE HEIGHT THAT
GREAT MEN REACHED AND KEPT WERE NOT ATTAINED BY SUDDEN FLIGHT, BUT THEY, WHILE
THEIR COMPANION SLEPT, TOILED UPWARD IN THE NIGHT.”
Dear friend, the greatest risk you will
ever incur is the risk of failure to seize the power of the present. Will
you let the time and opportunities God is bringing your way to slip through your
fingers? Or will you start seizing the opportunities that come your way each
day?
“PEOPLE BOUND FOR GREATNESS,” SAYS, LES
BROWN, A RENOWNED INTERNATIONAL MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER AND AUTHOR, “JUMP OUT OF
BED TO EMBRACE THE MORNING.”
Make sure you are taking steps forward.
Make sure you are not stagnant. A little effort you exert this very moment can
go a long way in producing outstanding results for you.
As I round off, I leave you with the
immortal words of the great Catholic Nun, Mother Theresa: “Yesterday is gone.
Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only TODAY. Let us begin.”
