What is Good about “Good Friday?”

The Cross of Christ[/caption]

“And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.” (Luke 23:33)
“Good Friday,” as part of Easter celebration commemorating the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, is the best thing to happen to mankind because depraved mankind was restored back to God.
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God.”
In God’s scheme of things, the way to redeem mankind was to have Jesus numbered among the transgressors, though He was without sin, by making Him the unblemished, sacrificial lamb (Mark 15:28).
In his first contact with the Saviour of the world while baptizing people in the River Jordan, John the Baptist by revelation proclaimed: “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”  (John 1:29).
Like any mortal, the same John the Baptist who proclaimed Jesus as the “Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world,” later doubted what he proclaimed Jesus to be. The reason for his doubt is not far-fetched. At that time, John the Baptist was imprisoned by King Herod for reproving him for taking his (Herod’s brother’s) wife.
Having been the forerunner of Jesus and having been proclaiming Jesus as the Messiah who was to come, he expected that Jesus would perform a miracle to deliver him from prison.
Dear reader, our ways are not God’s ways and unless we learn to key into God’s agenda for our lives by exercising faith in Him and in His Word, no amount of intellectualism or reasoning will help us in our faith walk. Our brain is too small to understand God; only simple faith in Him will help us to understand Him in the light of His Word, the Bible.
To some, “Good Friday” was a bad day for Jesus – the unblemished, innocent Lamb of God. To them, for Jesus who at the end of His trial was found not to have committed any crime deserving punishment of death, to be later crucified, that fateful Friday could not be said to be a good Friday.
But for those who absolutely believe in the finished redemption work at Calvary accomplished by Jesus, that fateful Friday which Jesus was crucified is a “Good Friday.”
Prolific Christian author, Oswald J. Smith, while commenting on a popular hymn titled, “He Died of a Broken Heart,” pointed out that the idea that Jesus died of a broken heart was not a sound one and that Jesus resurrected and ascended to heaven.
Whether there is anything good about Good Friday depends on where you are looking. The question to ponder is: “Was Jesus' death the end of the whole show? Did he not resurrect?”
If Jesus’ death and resurrection is anything to go by, that fateful Friday that He was crucified is a Good Friday for humanity; for if Jesus had not been crucified on that fateful Friday, the reverse would have been the case. This Good Friday, we should  focus on the purpose of Jesus’ death and resurrection. It is then that we will appreciate and have every cause to celebrate.
